The tender has been launched for the construction of two rain gardens. The first will be built at Chełmońskiego Street and the second on a plot at Monte Cassino
The activities are carried out as part of the LIFE PACT project, financed by the European Commission and implemented jointly by Krakow, Leuven and Madrid. The main objective is to introduce nature-based solutions (NBS) in the city. These will help the city adapt to climate change. The Life Pact project is innovative in social terms, as it involves residents in the process of revitalising green areas and creating rain gardens.
The tender announced for the construction of a square in Azory is another important stage in the process of creating new green and blue infrastructure. The first stage was the design of the space during autumn workshops with residents. It was during the consultation meeting that the participating residents decided that the square should be free of wild car infrastructure, and that concrete and paving stones should be replaced with flowers, shrubs and trees. It was also agreed at the meeting that the square needed benches, primarily for the comfort of seniors and young people, who would be able to use them during breaks between lessons. Residents also proposed the installation of multifunctional shelters, which are needed by the local community. We present a visualisation.
Work will also begin on the second garden on Monte Cassino Street. Here, residents have opted for a quiet garden with benches in the shade, flowers and shrubs. The busy area between Monte Cassino, Szwedzka and Dębowa Streets will be redeveloped and become a resident-friendly place.
The work will begin after the contractor for the EU project has been selected and will last three months. In addition to the two gardens mentioned above, three other selected public spaces in the capital of Małopolska will also be landscaped, where the effect of the so-called urban heat island is keenly felt by residents.
LIFE Pact is an initiative that aims to develop and test an integrated approach to climate change adaptation in cities through the implementation of nature-based solutions. The project is financed by the LIFE Programme and the National Fund for Environmental Protection and Water Management, with 15% of the funding coming from the City of Krakow's budget.
